Founded in 1880 by English author Thomas Hughes, Rugby emerged as an experimental utopian colony, a bold vision that, while ultimately unsuccessful, left an indelible mark on Tennessee's landscape. Though Hughes's experiment faded, the community persevered through the 20th century. Beginning in the 1960s, residents and descendants undertook an ambitious restoration, carefully preserving original structures and thoughtfully reconstructing others. Today, Rugby's striking Victorian architecture and serene setting draw visitors from across the country, and in 1972, the historic district earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places.
